What's New for the 2005 Ferrari Superamerica? The 2005 Ferrari Superamerica is a limited-production derivative of the 575M Maranello that features a trick, power-operated targa-style roof. Called Revocromico, the glass roof panel flips 180 degrees backwards in about seven seconds to give occupants toupee-tousling access to the outside world. Once open, the glass panel lies atop the rear deck and doesn't intrude on trunk space. The glass panel also contains electro-chemical cells that allow it to become more or less opaque; the Superamerica's driver can choose from five different light-allowing settings. Other alterations for the Superamerica include slightly more horsepower for the V12 engine, an updated shift program for the F1 transmission, bigger wheels, and exclusive options. Advantages of the 2005 Ferrari Superamerica:
- A traditional front-engine, rear-drive Ferrari GT
- Exquisite steering
- V12 power
- Cool targa-and-convertible hybrid design of Revocromico roof panel
Objections to the 2005 Ferrari Superamerica: - Limited production
- Even more expensive than usual
Editor's Advice: It would seem that even Ferrari is not immune to the lure of retro. The Superamerica (what other car company could get away with such a name?) has roots going back to a short run of V12-powered Ferraris from the mid- to late 1950s. That the 2006 Superamerica is worthy of the lineage is not in doubt. More important is the question of whether having a roof that flips backward on your 575M is worth the extra price of a Lotus Elise and change? It would certainly seem so – America's 170-car allotment of Superamericas is rumored to already be sold out.
