Editor's Advice: Since the day it arrived on U.S. shores, the Volvo V40 has been at a disadvantage. It's styled like the boxy Volvos of the past and drives more like an economy car than an entry-luxury wagon. At sticker price, the 2004 Volvo V40 cannot hope to compete with the Audi A4 Avant, the BMW 325i, the Lexus IS 300 SportCross or the Volkswagen Passat. At the heavily discounted prices for which the Volvo V40 usually sells, well-equipped versions of lesser vehicles such as the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Jetta are a better deal.
