What's New for the 2004 Isuzu Ascender?
In the hopes that it might increase sales, a short-wheelbase version of the 2004 Isuzu Ascender arrives. Sold only in S trim, the new Ascender is powered by a 275-horsepower, 4.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine and is offered in both two- and four-wheel-drive versions. Option packages include the Preferred Equipment package, the LS package, the Leather package and the Luxury package. Extended-length Isuzu Ascenders receive modified option package content, a new Leather package, new alloy wheel designs and the following stand-alone options: third-row floor mats, side-impact airbags, OnStar communications and power adjustable pedals.

Advantages of the 2004 Isuzu Ascender:

  • Superior warranty to the GM models on which it is based
  • Sturdy body-on-frame construction
  • Up to seven-passenger capacity
  • Powerful engines

Objections to the 2004 Isuzu Ascender:

  • Warranty could be no good if Isuzu closes up shop
  • Skittish handling in emergency avoidance situations
  • Interior materials look and feel inexpensive
  • Lacks long-distance seat comfort

Editor's Advice:
Two years ago, Isuzu pulled the plug on the comfortable, reliable, rugged and unique Trooper and replaced it with this rebadged version of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer. Since Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile and GMC currently sell what is essentially the same vehicle, why wouldn’t you take advantage of the General Motors rebates, incentives and zero-percent financing? Because the Isuzu Ascender comes with a better warranty? There is nothing compelling about the 2004 Isuzu Ascender, and given the shaky financial ground upon which the company stands, we’d recommend taking a pass.
